• Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd has agreed with Hawker Siddeley to purchase the Hands range of automatic-coupling semi-trailers for a cash consideration of less than £50,000. This purchase covers the goodwill and design of the Hands range of automatic trailer couplings and the complementary range of lighweight semitrailers. Of particular importance, says CF, is the BEE range of Hands 6-ton-payload trailers developed as matched units for Ford D300 tractive units.
Production of the trailer portion of Hands automatic-coupling equipment will be transferred to CF's Dereham factory: Hands couplings will be available for sale to other trailer manufacturers and specialist bodybuilders. Production of the acquired trailer range will be absorbed into the appropriate CF factories in Norfolk, Lancashire and Northern Ireland.
The Hands tractor portion of the couplings will in future be produced by Gloster Saro at Hucclecote, Gloucester. A new company, called Gloster Neway will operate from Hucclecote and will include suspensions in its products.
