1920 The Company commenced business in a small single storey building. The total area covered only 160 sq.ft. Then—as now—the object of the business was to provide service, at that time, mainly to chauffeurs in the mews of the West End of London requiring a rapid tube repair service.
1922 By 1922 the novel idea of a business specialising in tyre service began to appeal to the motor trade and a move to premises ten times the size was imperative. Premises were found in Romney Street, Westminster, and the available working space was increased from 160 sq.ft. to 1,500 sq.ft. The confidence and foresight shown by the founders of Marsham was rapidly rewarded.
1925 In 1925 even larger premises were needed and the business moved to Charlotte Street, London, W.1, where the space available was 4,300 sq.ft. This was indeed a great advance for a business which had only been in existence for five years. Almost at the same time two other courageous steps were taken which, looking back over the years, were the introduction of a new era in Tyre Distribution. • It was during this year that Marsham acquired its first delivery van. Perhaps even more far-reaching in its effect was the opening of our first provincial tyre service station in Albion Street, Leeds. It is doubtful whether at that time it was realised that the future pattern of tyre trading was being foreshadowed. Mobile service together with national coverage later became essential features of our sales policy—indeed it could be said that without them this story could never have been written. The Leeds venture was an immediate success which encouraged further expansion.
In this momentous year for the Company, Marsham built in Bristol its second provincial depot. It was a specifically designed building which was thought to be more than adequate. By 1932, however, a much larger building had to be erected, designed to cover the needs for many years ahead. New building plans had to be made in 1965. Our present branch opened in December 1966.
