• The 4x4 Mahindra 'LI Indian series has finally gone on sale in the UK, eight months after its launch at Motorfair. Starting price for the Willys Jeep clone is £7,195 ex VAT.

Built in India by Mahindra and Mahindra, there are two models; the 2,032mm wheelbase Indian Brave and the 2,311mm wheelbase Indian Chief. Payload for both is a modest 400kg including driver, making it a direct competitor for cheaper East European products such as the Lada Niva van.

Power is from the ageing Peugeot XDP — 490 IDI 2.1 litre engine, producing 46kW (62hp) at 4,500rpm and 120Nm (89Ibft) at 2,000rpm. Specification includes leaf springs all round, servo-assisted drum brakes and a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the top three gears only. A twospeed transfer box transmits drive to all four wheels.
