• Research into the use of ceramics in petrol and diesel engines has shown that they could offer advantages in some applications compared with conventional materials.
A series of projects costing 25.5m was the result of a programme set up jointly in October 1986 by the I/11 and industry under the title of Ceramic Applications in Reciprocating Engines (CARE). Participating companies include Ford, Leyland Pat, Perkins and consultant Ricardo.
Potential uses include valve train components, turbochargers, IDI diesel precombustion chambers, and chamber insulation.
