• Radioprinters are being used on a trial basis in the London area by both the AA and air express company DHL to provide instant printed instructions to drivers.
The trials, being undertaken separately by the two companies, involve a radioprinter developed by Spectronics Microsystems of Cambridge.
The AA plans to operate radioprinters in 600 service vans in the London area Its system will be a data-only system, providing drivers with their instructions in printed form.
DHL has been operating a radioprinter system in 40 Ford Fiesta vans from its King's House building since April.
It says this is the first commercial application anywhere for radio printers, and now plans to instal the system in another 60 of its London vans to provide coverage throughout the area within the M25 ring.
Prices of the system vary according to specification, but printers start at £400 for the RS330.
