A GERMAN hydroelectric power station at Schluchsee, in the Black Forest, has become the latest member of the electric vehicle test programme jointly sponsored by the government and the GES organisation in Essen.
Schluchsee power station is of the pumped storage type and has turbines and control rooms more than a mile inside the mountain. The pump room is reached by a tunnel sloping at 1 in 14 and is served by vehicles carrying personnel and equipment.
Ventilation problems in the tunnel led to the introduction of a Mercedes-Benz 307 electric van which, during tests, clocked up 30 round trips without recharging.
As the vehicle is constantly in the regenerative braking phase when going into the tunnel and as battery boost-chargers have been installed at both ends of the tunnel, the van produces a mileage range considerably in excess of similar units in the electric vehicle test programme.
