THE THREAT from the Greater London Council to ban roadtrains from London was as predictable as the emotive language used by the anti-lorry lobby in support of it. A spokesman for the London Boroughs Association has already said that in supporting the ban they would seek exemption for showmen's vehicles which provide a public service.
To argue that a merry-go-round or an African elephant is more important to the public than sustenance, clothes and comfort demonstrates the depth of thought which has gone into the thinking behind this move.
Those who propose bans should be required to suggest alternatives. One alternative to banning lorries in transit in London is a purpose-built ring road. And sooner or later it must come.
The M25 will make little appreciable difference to London's traffic. Transport operators have no desire to pass through London; this operation unnecessarily wastes vehicle and driver time and consumes extra fuel. But until a road is provided, pass through they will.
Postponement of the inevitable ring road is aggravated by GLC giving itself planning permission to construct a fruit market inside London and a fish market adjacent to an already overcrowded main road.
Of course, both are sited on derelict ground and both will contribute greatly to GLC's coffers. They are also sources of traffic nuisance.
This muddled thinking must cease; the planners must plan for all. eventualities and not only in London. There are scaled down models of this GLC philosophy throughout the UK.
In CM next week we look at the own-account sector and publish two road tests.
• How does Sainsbury specify vehicles? • How does CM get to your desk? • How does Woolco organise its transport? • How does a confectioner cope with peaks? • What does FTA do for own-account men? • Can we learn from a productivity study?
• Are there advantages in rebuilding bodies?
We've asked the questions and next week we publish the answers. There will also be road test reports on the VW transporter and the Dodge G26 in CM next Friday.
