THE 12.8-kilometre-long Frejus Tunnel — which will cut the journey between France and the Northern Italian industrial area around Turin — is being opened for heavy goods vehicles in early August (cars only from July 9).

Work on the tunnel, the longest in Europe, started in 1974 and has been heavily backed by EEC loans because of its significance for the EEC's transport infrastructure.

Next year it is expected that 250,000 lorries will pass through the tunnel, which lies at an altitude of about 4000ft in the French and Italian Alps.

The project cost £81 million, but further heavy expenditure is envisaged to improve access routes on both sides of the frontier.

THE Road Haulage Association, in conjunction with Commercial Vehicle Insurance Services Ltd, has launched an extended vehicle warranty scheme exclusively for its members.

The scheme is available for all makes of commercial vehicles over 7.5 tonnes gvw which still have at least six months of the manufacturer's warranty unexpired.

The scheme covers the engine, gearbox and rear axle and includes recovery and vehicle hire benefits. Additionally, warranty holders are registered as members of National Breakdown Recovery Services (Commercial) Ltd.

The extended warranty insurance commences when the manufacturer's warranty ceases, thereby giving two years protection. The scheme is underwritten by Lloyd's of London.
