Where do we start? If you want history it's got it by the bucket load, but more importantly its offroad ability is, arguably, second to none. While modern 4x4s may be able to tackle some pretty tough terrain, not many eclipse the Defender when the going gets really tough.

It obviously helps to have a product development period of over 50 years, but now it can be specced with ABS, leather and electric windows. And it's also received an engine transplant. Out goes the long-serving V8 and in comes a five-cylinder common-rail with much improved fuel economy.

Of course, with such a specific product you do need specific demands to gel the best out of it. On road, over long distances it is a chore and the driving position and gear change are quite demanding—this is no limo. But among the dirt it remains king.
