Based on the Jeep Cherokee Sport, the Pioneer makes its miraculous conversion to commercial vehicle with the removal of the rear seals and flattening of the load area. On the market for over a year now, it received an engine transplant mcently, with the introduction of a common-rail 2.8-litre. And a smooth unit it is too, producing a handy 161hp and a rather hefty 400Nm of torque.
Driving through a five-speed transmission and Jeep's Command-Trac four-wheel drive system the Pioneer is a surprisingly easy drive on or off the road. Its chassis feels soundly secure, even through the twisty bits. and though payload is a light 370kg ifs still useful enough to carry tools, work equipment etc. Load volume is 1.4m3 and unlike some of its rivals the rear side doors open. improving access. The interior is pleasant — due to its passenger roots —and overall build is reassuringly tight.
