Times are changing in the pickup world and the latest generation has really set a new standard for the rest

to follow.

N. so long ago you could be sure of one thing when driving a pickup on-road:it was going to he a ha ndful, especiallv unladen. But Nissan's new-generation Navara and Toyota's latest Hilux have taken away that uncertainty, especially in the wet.

Further pickup traits, such as slushy gear change and engines that sound permanently stressed, have also been attended to. Mitsubishi's L200 replacement—due next year—may mount a creditable challenge, although it's definitely off the pace. Ditto the Ford Ranger. However, the isuzu Rodeo's decent road manners and a smooth and gutsy 3.0-litre engine make it a pleasure to drive.

The Land Rover Defender continues to soldier on, while the Jeep Pioneer and Nissan Terrano still have a part to play if outright payload is not a major factor.
