The outgoing International Van of the Year began last year with a big reputation to maintain. The old model had proved to he a versatile performer. but slightly lacking in driver appeal. The newcomer had its driven wheels shifted to the independently-suspended rear and borrowed heavily from Merc's passenger car line-up, eaming the title
• C-Class for the workers on our first encounter. Despite the potential problems from a lightly laden rear driver, the new Vito gives an excellent ride, helped by decent electronic aids such as ABS, traction control and ESP as standard. A six-speed transmission with dash-mounted gearshift is a great improvement.
Early versions, however, proved not to be as refined as first hoped, with significant levels of noise and harshness, especially from the rear end. Thankfully. the German engineers took the criticisms on-board and running changes, including revised final drive ratios, have transformed the Vito experience.
