Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Steyr Trucks — the only European truck builder to win a share of the development contract for a new generation of mid-range trucks for the US Army — is to collaborate with Stewart-Stevenson of Texas to build 12 prototypes.

Austrian-based Steyr has designed three 4x4 units and nine 6x6s for evaluation. They are based on the 12M18 chassis and will have 2.5 and fivetonne payloads.

Two other participants in the new development programme include General Motors and a consortium of several US truck builders, each of which will be responsible for 12 evaluation and test vehicles.

The Steyr design incorporates a large number of USsourced components and power units, but the prototypes will use European cabs, transfer boxes and drive axles.

Up to 60,000 units will be needed over the next eight years; Steyr entered the prequalification programme after winning a 1,600-vehicle order from the Canadian Army early last year.
