• Gloomier job prospects in road transport are forecast for 1989 in the latest survey by Manpower, the parent company of the transport recruitment agency Overdrive.
As many as 15% of the transport employers interviewed plan to reduce their workforces in the first four months of 1989 — over seven times the figure produced by a similar survey for the final quarter of 1988. One in four employers planned to increase their staffs, but even this is a fall of 12% compared with the previous quarter.
By way of contrast, the vehicle manufacturing industry is one of the healthiest industries in the country, with 40% of the employers surveyed planning to build up their workforces and only 2% talking of cutting back.
In the regional breakdown, the west of Britain comes top in the table of job prospects, with 32% of employers from 22 industries planning to add to their staff, compared with only 15% in East Anglia.
The North East wants most decreases, with 21% planning to lay off staff, but in the West Midlands only 7% are forecasting cutbacks.
