HAZARDOUS CONTROLS • New Health and Safety Commission regulations designed to protect the health of people at work have been hailed by the Employment Secretary as the most farreaching health legislation since the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, which come into force on 1 October 1989, will apply to all areas of industry and are designed to be flexible enough to remain effective into the 21st century.

The new rules require employers to make their own assessment of the risks involved in their business.
