• Ford has finally confirmed the existance of a replacement Fiesta. It will appear in the spring, with a car-derived-van version following about a month after the car.
The CDV is likely to be offered with either the Ford OHV 950cc or 1,100cc petrol engines, and possibly with the new four-cylinder 1,300cc "lean-burn" petrol engine.
The diesel option will be Ford's recently announced 1.8litre IDI naturally-aspirated engine which delivers 45kW (60hp) and 110Nm (811bft).
This unit is the unblown version of the turbo-diesel engine destined for the P100 diesel pickup, and the naturallyaspirated unit will supersede the 1.6-litre ID! Ford diesel in the Escort and Fiesta passenger cars and vans.
The van version of the new Fiesta will not offer a greatly increased payload, but there will be a significant increase in load volume over the current model's 1.19m.
The new Escort car-derived van is around 100mm longer overall than the old model, with an increase in its wheelbase of 150mm.
Ford has not given any indication of retail prices yet, but there will certainly be an increase in price for the larger capacity 1.8-litre diesel model.
Our artist's impression of the new van is based on the four-door passenger version. The two-door Fiesta van will probably have slightly longer doors than shown here, but the shape of the new Fiesta van will be largely the same.
