Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Even in a country of vast distances, such as Australia, 79 per cent of the tonnage of goods consigned goes by road. According to Thorolf Thoresen, an economist employed by the Australian Road Research Board, hauliers have since 1959-60 made "the largest individual contribution to any single transport made in terms of gross domestic product." On average about 12½ per cent of gross national expenditure has been on transport.

I doubt whether even statistics of this kind will mollify a public that is apparently growing increasingly hostile to lorries.
