TO serve the needs of traders in Preston and the surrounding areas a spacious modern parcels depot at Longridge Road Trading Estate, Preston, was opened by B.R.S. (Parcels), Ltd., on Monday. This depot will embrace the services at present operated from Leyland depot, which will be closed.

The nev;,% depot comprises two main buildings, a traffic shed with 14,400 sq. ft. of floor space and an office block. The traffic shed is a steel-framed and asbestosclad building with an island platform 240 ft. in length, 60 ft. wide, and canopies projecting 25 ft. over the loading bays. The brick-built office block also houses mess-rooms and up-to-date staff facilities.

Sixty vehicles can he loaded or unloaded simultaneously; handling of traffic over the platform will be speeded by the use of semi-live stillages. Forklift equipment is also available. Regular collection and delivery services will operate from and to Preston, Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Blackpool, St. Annes, Longridge, Leyland, Chorley, Wigan, Darwen, Blackburn and Burnley.

Round the dock operation will expedite dispatch and receipt of goods on nightly road trunk services.

Warehousing facilities will be provided in a part of the main transit shed and also a security compound where valuable and vulnerable traffic can be held whilst awaiting transit. Vehicles ranging from 30 cwt. to 12 tons carrying capacity will be based at the depot, serviced from a specially designed service station.
