• international transport firms are becoming "lost in a tax jungle", according to a new survey on road transport in central and eastern Europe which suggests high taxes are having serious consequences on trade. The survey, by the International Road Transport Union, says unjustified taxes will cause barriers to international trade, rising inflation and more expensive transport. Romania was highlighted as a country with 12 different taxes on road transport.
The IRU is calling on governments to: End discrimination;
U End transit and local taxes; U Harmonise fiscal laws; Li Set reasonable taxes.
The Polish government is launching annual vignettes allowing trucks to drive on Polish roads—at a cost of nearly £1,000.
