ASURPLUS of several hundred pounds" is expected by West Hartlepool Transport Department at the end of the current financial year (March 31), instead of a deficit of £3,000. This result is attributed to a new contract which will permit the cost of tyres to be spread over their whole life, instead of being charged in the year they are fitted.
The outlook for 1954-5, however, is not so bright. Loan charges will rise from £26,000 to £29,900, and the recent pay increase costs £2,850 more a year.
A special meeting of the transport committee is to review all services to effect economies by re-routeing.
