Despite more operators leasing vehicles rather than buying them, Bradford-based Peckover Transport is adamant that owning your own vehicles and trailers is still the best option. The haulier has just taken delivery of four new Iveco Stralis units and a Mercedes-Benz Axor, all Euro-5, along with a Dennison trailer. It is also expecting two more SDC-built trailers to arrive this month to help with retail
deliveries over Christmas and the January sales.
MD Richard Clayton says he has been put off leasing by the likelihood of a big bill at the end of the contract.
"Our policy is to buy new, but if we expand quickly then we would probably take on some second-hand vehicles or use rental and contract hire vehicles," Clayton says.
He adds that, in tough economic times, it is important to have assets in case of the need for some quick cash. "When the recession bit, if we had some vehicles sitting in the yard, we could sell them quickly."
