The report of the Scientific Committee on Animal Health and Animal Welfare says livestock transport should be avoided where possible because animals find It stressful. Where live animals must be moved its recommendations include: *A limit of eight hours on the transport to slaughter of pigs, horses, calves up to six months and lambs of 20kg or less.
*A limit of 12 hours on the transport to slaughter of cattle and sheep; at present drivers must halt after 14 hours to give animals a one-hour break.
C' Adequate access to each animal for Inspection and to enable free movement to obtain food or water and to Ile down.
* Sufficient headroom within livestock trailers to allow animals unimpeded standing room and adequate ventilation.
* Sea crossings on RO-R0 ferries should not be permitted above winds of force 5.
a Artificial ventilation should be provided on vehicles that travel below decks.
* Drivers of livestock vehicles and everyone else handling animals during transport must be trained and certified.
