Companies need to have proper systems in place to deal with problem managers, says RHA regional director Mike Farmer. Key issues are: Grievance procedures: By law companies should have grievance procedures that enable disgruntled staff to bring the firm's attention to any problems with managers.
Communication: "This Is the key to everything that happens in management," says Farmer. If a problem
arises, first counsel the manager in question to make sure he understands what his role is and what the company requires of him.
Discretion: "A manager's authority must never be undermined in the eyes of his staff." says Farmer. Instead, make sure there are behind-the-scenes efforts to resolve the problems.
Reconciliation: Settling differences between managers and staff should be the main objective. Work out if the problems are caused by attitudes, working systems or some practice that employees don't like. "Once you identify the problem," says Farmer, "you have a target with which to rectify It." Warnings: If all else fails, verbal and written warnings to the manager concerned may be necessary. ultimately followed by dismissal.
