• A new European law could flood the market with Japanese vehicles, including commercials, according to a report published this week.
The proposed law by the European Commission is initially aimed at cars and will allow marketing authorisation by one member state to apply throughout the Community — instead of having to seek authorisation from 12 separate countries.
The report by the Norton Rose M5 Group — an association of law firms — says: "A major fight could erupt over plans to extend the law to commercial vehicles" because European manufacturers fear it would make it easy for Japanese truck makers to penetrate Community markets.
