ONCE again the Tyne Improvement Commission have failed to rid themselves of the cross-Tyne ferry service linking North and South Shields. Tynemouth and South Shields Corporations have rejected an offer to take over the ferry free of charge—an offer which has been made before because the undertaking operates at a considerable loss.

At the same time, the two authorities have announced that they will onpose the Commission's scheme for increasing tolls. The Commission want to add 6d. to the charge for vehicles, and Id. to pedestrians' fares.
