REPAYMENT of the debt on Glasgow Transport Department was recently marked b,y a luncheon, during which the convener, Councillor David S. Brown, handed to the Lord Provost a cheque for £4,465,739.
Presiding over the company, which included representatives of trade unions and employees, officials and former officials, Councillor Brown said the transaction was the most important in the 47 years' history of the department. The fact that they were able to clear their feet of debt and save £183,000 annually in interest charges was a high tribute to the enterprise, vision, and foresight of those who controlled the department in earlier days.
Mr. Harold Clay, acting assistant general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, stated that the transaction was a tribute to public ownership and co-operative effort.
