CUSTOMS OFFICERS have dismantled a fuel laundering plant at an industrial site in Coalisland. Northern Ireland which was said to be capable of processing 25,000 litres of illegal fuel a week.

More than 6.700 litres of contaminated diesel were removed from the site, as well as a van, tanks, pumps and filtration and storage equipment.

Colin McAllister, Customs' head of detection for Northern Ireland, says:" If this sophisticated operation had not been shut down it would have meant an annual revenue loss of £650.000.

• Three Manchester men have been jailed at Bolton Crown Court for a total of seven years after Customs broke up a fuel laundering operation which had evaded £1.6m in duty and VAT.

The men were arrested in June 2002 after a Customs surveillance operation which recorded tanker loads of off .road diesel and paraffin on a Bolton industrial estate.
