• A Midlands lorry driver has been cleared of causing death by dangerous driving after his vehicle ploughed into a van on the M6 and killed a motorist.
But Nicholas Thorneycroft, of Blenheim Road, Solihull, was convicted by a majority verdict at Stafford Crown Court on an alternative charge of driving without due care and attention.
He was fined £800 and banned from driving for three years. He denied both charges.
Andrew Alderson of Oldham, Lancs died when Thorneycroft's Parceiforce truck hit the back of his van between the Hilton Park service area and Junction 11 last March.
The prosecution claimed Thorneycroft may have been in a trance or nodding off when the accident happened.
Denis Desmond, defending, said Thorneycroft had worked for his employer for 25 years and driven something like 800,000 miles without any mishaps.
