An Ireland-based haulier forgot wet peat was heavier than dry and overloaded one of its lorries, West Bromwich magistrates heard.
The 7.5-tonner was found 1,000kg over its GVW at the Perry Barr car park off the M6 near Birmingham, Karen Salisbury, prosecuting for the Vehicle Inspectorate, told the court. Reid Transport of Ballymena was fined £500 after admitting two charges of using a vehicle exceeding its maximum permitted weight in February. The firm was also fined £250 with £65 costs after admitting having a defective speed limiter on the truck.
The firm said in a letter to the court that it had forgotten wet peat was heavier than dry.
