INDUSTRIAL disputes in the coal and steel industries in South Wales have hit Welsh hauliers so badly many are going out of business.
Most hauliers in the region are geared to these two industries, and according to Road Haulage Association South Wales Area secretary Peter Webb, hauliers "have taken a severe knock this year."
"The situation has become acute, now, and so many operators are scratching around for work.
"We see no signs of the so-called economic revival, and hauliers find it increasingly difficult to make cash returns on their vehicles.
"So, more firms are forced to buy second-hand vehicles.
"To survive, hauliers must quote viable and economic costs. Above all, it is better to reduce your fleet first before your costs."
