Measuring Misalignment

TO meet the needs of the police and certain public undertakings, Joseph Lucas, Ltd., Great King Street, Birmingham, 19, have produced a modified version of their Bcamsetter headlamp aiming equipment which will measure the degree of headlamp misalignment in the vertical and horizontal planes.

It is known as the Beam Tester and incorporates two levers which permit the equipment to be lined up with an incorrectly aimed headlamp. Misalignment can then be read off in I-degree divisions on two calibrated scales. The Beam Tester costs £70.

A metal cover is now available for the Beamsetter and the Beam Tester. The plate costs 10s. 3d., and fits over the aperture on the upper side of the optical tube.

Faster Moulding D EDUCED moulding time for glass' N. fibre reinforced plastics, without sacrifice of quality, is said to be possible with emulsion-bound glass mat to be produced by Turner Brothers Asbestos Co., Ltd., Rochdale, Lancs. The material, which does not have loose fibres, can he handled and tailored easily whilst permitting fast wetting-out in resin. Two types of mat incorporating E" and "

A" glass mat will be,„avuihible from September 1.

Bent Copper BENDS in copper tube from f,-.1 in. diameter can be formed by a handoperated Staffa bending tool, manufactured by Chamberlain Industries, Ltd., Argall Avenue, Leyton, London, E.10. The tool can be mounted on a bench or in a vice, and will produce bends up to 180 degrees in one operation, without heating or filling the tube.

Squeak Stopper RUBBER bushes now in widespread use for suspension and similar assemblies can emit irritating squeaks, particularly in dry weather. To prevent this, Holt Products, Ltd., New Addington, Surrey, offer rubber lubricant in an aerosol pack at 6s. In the workshop, this compound would be useful for simplifying the fitting of tyre covers and rubber hoses.

Portable Air Power DR1MARILY for tyre inflation and spray painting, Atlas Copco (Great Britain), Ltd., Hemel Hempstead, Herts, produce a portable version of one of their smaller compressors. This unit, which is known as the PE3AD and is mounted on two rubber-tyred wheels, consists of a h.p. electric motor driving a compressor which delivers air at up to 100 p.s.i. c20

The tubular handle attached to the base plate of the trolley acts as an air receiver to damp out pulsations (no other reservoir is fitted) and incorporates a pressure gauge and a safety valve. The complete compressor costs £52.

Local Pre-heating A NEW technique for heating steel NEW

locally, in preparation for forming locating " nibs," has been developed by British Oxygen Gases, Ltd. The technique, which involves the use of specially adapted oxy-fuel gas nozzles, is being used in the workshops of Messrs. Thomas Turton and Sons, Sheffield. It is claimed that localized heating confines the effect upon metal properties to a much smaller area than the old process of pre-heating by air-blown forge.

Welding Reference AWALL chart which gives, against all metals in general use, weld preparation details, melting points, techniques and information on the correct fillers, fluxes and flame settings to be used with them, is offered by the Suffolk Iron Foundry (1920), Ltd., Stowmarket, Suffolk, at Is. 6d. by post. The two-colour chart measures 24 in. by 20 in. and is the first in a new Sifbronze series.

Faults Displayed

L'OR rapid fault-finding on petrol engines, Aveley Electric, Ltd., Ayron Road, South Ockendon, Essex, offer an American-made oscilloscope. It is known as the Enginscope and presents the ignition sequences of the cylinders as individual traces aligned beneath each other on a glass screen.

Thus any discrepancy between one trace and another is simply observed It is claimed that any fault can be diagnosed accurately without dismantling the engine. The equipment costs £410 including import duty and is guaranteed for a year. It is widely used for production-line testing in America.

Paper Swabs SUGGESTED uses for disposable paper wipers produced by KimberlyClark, Ltd., Larkfield, Maidstone, Kern. include cleaning engine and chassis components prior to assembly. The wipers, known as Kimwipes, are said to pick up

dust and dirt better than cloth, to leave a fluff-free finish.

They measure 171 in. by 10 in. and are packed in cartons of 100, priced from 2s. 6}cl. to 2s. 10d., depending on the quantity ordered,
