IT is somewhat remarkable that food traders as a whole have not given more attention to their vehicles and the methods of handling certain foodstuffs during transport," states Prof. Andrew B. Semple, Liverpool Medical Officer of Health, in his annual report.

Complaints had been made of lack of • care in personal cleanliness and failure to wear protective clothing when carrying food into places of delivery, he adds.

A steady improvement was being maintained in types of vehicle and the facilities for hygiene provided for drivers and their assistants. In a number of cases, insulated washing units had been installed in vans.

This suggestion has been made by Mr. F. S. Taylor, general manager of Newcastle Transport Department. He has also commented that motor scooters, besides representing a loss of traffic to buses, added appreciably to traffic congestion.
