THE largest profit in their history of more than 60 years was made by Derby Transport Department in the 12 months ended March 31. It was £57,877, £27,241 greater than in 1958-59.

The gross profit was slightly lower than last year, but less had to be spent out of it in loan repayments. Revenue went up by £5,323, and 250,000 more passengers were carried.

Mr. J. E. Frith, general manager, has expressed concern in his annual report over the shortage of staff.

NO SPEED-LIMIT CHANGES

THE Minister of Transport was not yet in a position to announce any variation in the speed limits applicable to certain types of commercial vehicle, in particular unladen light vans and pickups. This was stated in the House of Commons last week by Mr. John Hay, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport.

The matter had been gone into last year, he said, when one of the difficulties was the opposition of the trade unions.

RIVERDEE SCHEME STARTED

NvoRK on a road and bridge scheme costing £695,000, which will form a new gateway to North Wales from the industrial north of England, was started last week. The bridge will replace the Quecnsferry Bridge over the River Dee, near the eastern border of Flintshire, and the new road will divert traffic from the village of Queensferry.

The new three-span bridge, which will take two 24-ft. carriageways, is expected to be open to traffic in a year's time.

WIDER AIR RULES COMING into effect on August 14, the %--.• Work in Compressed Air (Amendment) Regulations, 1960, extend the scope of the Work in Compressed Air Special Regulations, 1958, so as to make them apply not only to places where engineering construction is carried on, but also to any premises to which the Factories Act, 1937, applies.

NEW E30m. VAUXHALL PLANT

CONDITIONAL planning permission has been granted by Mr. Henry Brooke. Minister of Housing, for the construction of a commercial-vehicle factory at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd. It is estimated 10 cost £30m. The company hope to begin site development before the end of the year.

ASSENT FOR FOUR ACTS

THE Royal Assent was given last week to the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, the Road Traffic and Roads Improvement Act, the British Transport Commission Act and the Mexborough and Swinton Traction Act.

PIONEER DIES

A PIONEER Sussex coach operator, Mr. P. G. Warren, managing director of Warren's Coaches (Kent and Sussex), Ltd., Ticehurst, has died. He commenced as an operator in 1919.
