FIVE vehicles of 26f tons were successfully transferred from contract-A to A licence by McKelvie and Co., Ltd., Barrhead, at Glasgow last week. Mr. W. F. Quin, Scottish Licensing Authority, was told by Mr. J. Law, for McKelvie, that Shanks and Co., Ltd., Barrhead, would prefer a free service to the present contract arrangement. They would give an undertaking that the vehicles would be used on the same traffic and for Shanks.

The vehicles were well employed in one direction with the bulk of the work to Glasgow Docks. There were also shipments to Liverpool. Manchester, and other ports. Sub-contractors were seldom enthusiastic about small loads to docks, which involved drops at perhaps a dozen ships. McKelvie had been obliged to give the sub-contractor the full loads and do the multi-drop deliveries themselves. They had also found a change in the pattern of deliveries of sanitary hardware to housing schemes. Smaller deliveries were now required.

For British Railways, the objectors, Mr. J. J. Clyde argued that increased hiring returns showed that McKelvie had been able to get the hires they needed. If any grant were made it should be smaller than requested, as the increased capacity for return loads from Manchester would permit the handling of all the necessary traffic.

Mr. Quin observed that Shanks were genuinely anxious to make the change and that they had undertaken not to make further contracts.
