I N the year ended March, 1948, payments from the Road Fund in connection with the maintenance and improvement of roads, and the construction of new ones, came lo. over £24,000,000. a figure which includes £8,600,000 spent on trunk roads. These figures, which compare with E15,600,000 and £7,000,000 respectively in the previous year are given in the annual report on the Administration of the Road Fund.
The report states that payments for all purposes totalled about £26,000,000, or £9,000,000 more than in the previous year. Up to the period covered by the report, 46,000 miles out-of a total of 175,000 miles of classified and unclassified roads were subject to the 30 M.p.h. speed limit.
The total amount spent on highways other than trttnk roads, in 1946-47, the latest period for which figures are available, was just over E64,000,000. This figure compares with nearly 00,000,000 spent in 1938-39, and about £48,000.000 in 1945-46.
