Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Selected Information which is likely to be of Interest to Makers, Owners, and their Buyers.

The White and Poppe Carburetter.

This ingenious arrangement of superimposed petrol sprayers, which is one of the features that have secured such an extended welcome from users for the White and Poppe carburetter, is probably familiar to most of our readers. This favourite form of vaporiser has been embodied on so many different types of chassis by well-known makers, that a new list of users, which has just been sent to us by the makers, seems almost to have been unnecessary ; it surely would have sufficed to have proclaimed " fitted to engines by almost all the well-known makers." Be that as it may, the well-prepared little catalogue, of which the latest edition accompanies the list we have mentioned, should be in every user's reference file. Everyone should learn by heart " A few Dont's " at the end of the White and Poppe treatise.

The New Departure Ball Bearings.

A ball-bearing which has been adopted as a standard component by the majority of the large manufacturers of motor-vehicles of all types in America, is that known as the Two-in-One, produced by the New Departure Manufacturing Co., of Bristol, Conn., U.S.A. This bearing possesses certain unusual characteristics, in that its makers claim that it is equally efficient as a radial or a thrust bearing. The inner member of the " Two-in-One" forms two races, and there are two separate outer races, one for each row of balls; the two sets of balls are separated by a special form of cage which is claimed to be nearly nonfrictional. The two outer races are tightly fitted into the shell which is, after assembly is complete, spun over at the edges in order permanently to fix the relationship between the inner and outer races. After the shell has been placed in position the outside of the bearing is accurately ground concentrically with the bore. Examination of the sectional drawing, which we reproduce herewith, will disclose the arrangement which, we are told, has given such a measure of satisfaction to American constructors. It will

be seen that each ball makes contact with the races at two diametrically-opposite points only, and the angle made by the line through these points with the axis of the bearing has been most carefully calculated in order to obtain the best combined resistance to radial and thrust pressures. Brown Brothers, Ltd., 22-34, Great Eastern Street, E.C., is the agent in this country for these interesting components.
