THE DET HAS withdrawn the domestic version of the drivers' hours legislation from the parliamentary rosters where it was due to be debated, citing various 'typographical issues'.
This will not affect the EU hours regs which come into force on 11 April (see next week). The withdrawal came within hours of an unrelated`fatal amendment tabled by Lord Attlee. recommending the Lords reject the law.
Attlee fears the Territorial Army will be unable to recruit professional drivers for weekend exercises because of the rest periods demanded by the regs, and that truck enthusiasts will be hit by unnecessary hills for tacho calibration and sealing.
A DfT spokesman says: "Of course we will look at it"—but would not commit to a timeframe. Attlee accepts his amendment would probably not stop the legislation passing into UK law but will still re-attach it if the government does not revisit the issues.
