• Not content with pursuing its own campaign to solve the mystery of lost CV wheels, the IRTE is also supporting Commercial Motor's wheel-loss campaign. At a well-attended seminar on wheel security hosted last week by the IRTE's Northern Centre, CM editor Brian Weatherley was presented with a cheque for £100 by Northern Centre chairman Terry Graham.
Among the factors raised as Likely causes of loose nuts and damaged studs was the amount of hard cornering, particularly on roundabouts, demanded of British commercial vehicles.
The urgency of the wheelloss campaign has been tragically illustrated yet again with the death of a driver whose maintenance procedure was described as "meticulous" by a Department of Transport investigator. Alan Cairns of Warrington was killed last month when his artic overturned on the M6 after shedding a nearside rear wheel.
