• A vocational HGV driver training scheme has been unveiled by the Road Transport Industry Training Board.
The six-month scheme is already working in the RTITB's North-West Region. It is designed to provide training for occupations associated with HGV driving, both for own-account and hire and reward operators. The first three months of the course is aimed at developing drivers' basic skills, including vehicle records. docu
mentation and vehicle safety. The second three-month period will be on-the-job training. "What drivers do in the second phase depends on what their sponsoring employers want. Options include yard operations training, vehicle loading or even Hazpak," says the RTITB.
Now schemes are to be launched in Scotland, East Midlands and South Wales; the RTITB hopes to have a national scheme in action this year.
