• West German brewer LOwenbrau is putting a new generation of electric-powered Mitsubishi urban delivery vans into service this week, based on the M248 Colenta pickup chassis. The vans can travel fully laden at a maximum of 60km/hour and have four forward gears. They will be used initially for city centre drops in Lowenbrau's home town of Munich. According to Lowenbrau logistics and distribution manager Winfried Zippel, the first vans on the fleet will be used mainly for "public relations and promotional purposes" because of their low 164kg payload. By the autumn of this year, however, Lowenbrat' will be running 1 tonne payload Mitsubishi pickups driven solely by electrics. The vans are capable of working a full 12-hour day on standard city centre/high street routes without needing to be recharged. LOwenbrau believes that increasingly tight EC emission regulations are going to force more fleets into running electric-powered vehicles.
