Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• MORE THAN 147,500 trucks, vans and public service vehicles are subject to the latest safety recalls against 26,000 in the last campain. The details are listed below.

Those operators who find their vehicles listed in the recall programme should contact the manufacturer's main agent as soon as possible if they have not done so already.

Model: Alexander/Olympian coaches. Build dates: May '88 to July '88.

Vehicle identification numbers: 10795, 10801 and 10818 to 10845.

Defect: The fire extinguisher cannot be accessed when the driver's seat is in the rearmost position.

Remedy: Replace existing six-litre capacity extinguisher with a 5.5-litre one. Numbers involved: 30.

Model: AWD, DGM, DPR and DOV.

Build dates: June '88 to July '89.

Vehicle identification numbers: DGM and DPR JT200859 to KT203948; DOV KT202165 to KT203765.

Defect: It is possible that an incorrect specification, high pressure steering outlet hose may have been fitted to the power steering pump. This could result in failure and sudden unexpected loss of power steering assistance.

Remedy: Renew suspect hose on DGM and DPR models. On DOV models renew hose if low pressure hose connection is at the top of the pump reservoir.

Numbers involved: 1,898.

Model: Bedford Midi Turbo diesel.

Build dates: 4 Mar '88 to 4 Nov '88. Vehicle identification numbers: JV610544 to KV634553.

Defect: It is possible that a number of vehicles have been supplied without additional wiring harness heat protection, and there is the potential for unpredictable electrical failure.

Remedy: Check and, if necessary, add the additional heat protection to the wiring harness.

Numbers involved: 121.

Model: Foden 3000 and 4000 Series. Build dates: 3000 Jan '89 to Aug '89; 4000 May '88 to Aug '89.

Vehicle identification numbers: Various between 300000 and 403524.

Defect: The telescopic steering downshaft is located by steel splines and guided by nylon splines during cabtilting operations.

Under certain conditions reengagement in the steel splines may not take place and if the downshaft failed loss of steering control could occur. Remedy: Re-work to add spacers to the steering mitre box mountings to ensure complete steel spline re-engagement. Numbers involved: 3,594.

Model: Iveco Ford Cargo 7-10 tonne with 13x5 Duo Servo brakes.

Build dates: 7/8 tonner 15 Nov '82 to 23 Mar '87; 9/10 tonner 21 Nov '80 to 22 Oct '87.

Vehicle identification numbers: 7/8 tonner two prefix letters before chassis numbers CA to HD. 9/10 tonner two prefix letters before numbers AS to HU. Defect: The park brake operating cable may wear within the rear brake assembly and if correct service procedures are not followed, may lead to cable failure. Remedy: Inspect park brake cable on vehicles not previously serviced according to revised instructions, and replace if necessary.

Numbers involved: 34,662.

Model: Iveco Ford Cargo.

Build dates: 1 Nov '80 to 2 Nov '88. Vehicle identification numbers: Various. Defect: Possible deterioration of foot brake control valve seal which could cause air leakage from the foot control valve and reduce or cut off the air supply to either front or rear brakes.

Remedy: Inspect the foot control valve and rework where required.

Numbers involved: 97,821. Model: MAN F53 6x2 twinsteer.

Build dates: 1988 to 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: WMAF530008M07467 to WMAF530029M075930, WMAF530063M078491 to INMAF530079M080171 and WMAF530154M086615 to WMAF530322M098363. Defect: Vehicles have been supplied with incorrect load-rated front tyres. Risk of overload. (Axle plated at 7.1 tonnes — tyres rated at 6.7 tonnes, 150 LI.) Remedy: Replace incorrect tyres with correct load-rated tyres. Numbers involved: 177.

Model: Renault Commando 2 models G16 fire tenders and G24 6x4 only. Build dates: 1 Jan '79 to 10 May '88. Vehicle identification numbers: 792746 to 727567.

Defect: There is a possibility of fatigue cracking of the side steering rod eye end which could result in loss of steering control if not remedied.

Remedy: Fit new side steering rod ends. Numbers involved: 183.

Model: Renault G260 and G290.

Build dates: 1 Mar '86 to 1 May '87. Vehicle identification numbers: 500314 to 501059.

Defect: It is possible that certain Paul Dahl spring brake actuators may be defective. There is a possibility of spring breakage and subsequent reduced parking brake efficiency.

Remedy: Replace all Dahl/Knorr brake actuators with date codes 07-86 and 4186 to 49-86 inclusive.

Numbers involved: 325.

Model: Scania 6x2 or 6x4 twinsteer. Build dates: 1988 to 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: 1131085 to 1153877. Defect: Incorrect heat treatment of steering box components could result in lock of steering and if not remedied, loss of steering control.

Remedy: Replace steering boxes with quality-assured components.

Numbers involved: 236.

Model: Scania all 3 Series trucks. Build dates: 1988 to 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: 1133448 to 1152140.

Defect: Steering column universal joint cups working out of top of column. The result is excessive steering system freeplay and, if not remedied, loss of steering control.

Remedy: Replace steering columns with quality-assured components.

Numbers involved: 4,848.

Model: Scania R143 Top line, normal and twin steer.

Build dates: 1988 onwards.

Vehicle identification numbers: SSS1143252 to SSS1148937, SSN4277330 to SSN4279965.

Defect: It is possible that a power steering pump "snap ring" may have been omitted and too short a hose fitted. The result could be loss of power steering assistance.

Remedy: Check for presence of "snap ring" and hose length. Any missing or incorrect components found to be replaced in accordance with Code of Practice.

Numbers involved: 142.

Model: Scania P93-4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 with AD80 rear axles.

Build dates: 1988 onwards.

Vehicle identification numbers: SSS1121088 to SSS1149282.

Defect: Incorrectly positioned rear hub oil seal wear washer could lead to excessive hub end float and, if not remedied, hub detachment could occur.

Remedy: Check rear hub oil seal and re-work if necessary.

Numbers involved: 604.

Model: Scania K and N coaches (Series 3 only).

Build dates: 1988 to 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: 1813960 to 1816457.

Defect: Steering column universal joint cups working out the top of the column. The result is excessive steering system free play and, if not remedied, loss of steering control.

Remedy: Replace steering column with quality-assured components.

Numbers involved: 274.

Model: Scania K113 coaches.

Build dates: 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: 1812612 to 1816479.

Defect: The fuel feed pipe to the injection pump may fracture due to vibration with the possibility of a fire risk. Remedy: Replace the pipe with a qualityassured component and revised clipping arrangement.

Numbers involved: 84.

Model: Scania K series coaches.

Build dates: 1988 to 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: 1814998 to 1816463.

Defect: It is possible that the left hand side of the foot brake pedal can foul the mounting bolt, preventing a full emergency brake application.

Remedy: Modify brake pedal by removing a small section of metal.

Numbers involved: 108.

Model: Seddon Atkinson Strato.

Build dates: 11 May '88 to 12 Sept '89. Vehicle identification numbers: 4x2 models 84184 to 87535; 6x2 models 86502 to 87581.

Defect: Multi-piece brake pipe fittings supplied by Parker Hannifin can pull out with the resultant potential loss of braking effort.

Remedy: Replace all suspect fittings with a new one-piece design. After implementing this change it is also necessary to ensure that ALL air-braking system pipe connections are correctly installed in their respective unions. Numbers involved: 970.

Model: Seddon Atkinson/Jack Allen 201 and 211 municipals with Britannia cab. Build dates: 201 17 Mar '86 to 13 Jan '87; 211 July '86 to 24 Mar '89. Vehicle identification numbers: 201 80475 to 81671; 211 81077 to 87019. Defect: The steering knuckle joint between the chassis and the cab can be • loaded during cab-tilt procedures. This could result in knuckle failure and loss of steering control.

Remedy: Replace the steering knuckle joints with an improved type which will not be loaded by cab tilting. Applies to all such Britannia-cabled vehicles. Numbers involved: 433.

Model: Seddon Atkinson 201 rigid and municipal series.

Build dates: Mar '84 to July '84.

Vehicle identification numbers: 77085 to 77583.

Defect: A number of vehicles may have been fitted with steering box mounting brackets of a lower than specified tensile strength. The bracket may crack and result in a loss of steering control. Remedy: Replace brackets with qualityassured components.

Numbers involved: 169.

Model: Seddon Atkinson Strato.

Build dates: April '88 to April '89. Vehicle identification numbers: All prior to chassis No 86572.

Defect: The cab tilt retaining bolt may be too long allowing the bolt to "bottom" before being fully tight. This could result in the tilt ram anchor point failing during cab tilting.

Remedy: Check length of bolt and replace M10x25mm with M10x2Omm type as necessary.

Numbers involved: 544.

Model: Seddon Atkinson Strato.

Build dates: Aug '88 to Dec '88.

Vehicle identification numbers: All vehicles prior to chassis No 85921.

Defect: Stress cracking of the welded area of the battery carrier/air reservoir support brackets. Complete failure and detachment could adversely affect the performance of the vehicle braking. Remedy: Weld two reinforcing stiffeners to carriers that are not already cracked. Replace complete battery carrier assembly with later issue if the original is found to be cracked.

Numbers involved: 407.

Model: Volvo FL7/10 and F10/12. Build dates: 1988 to 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: Various.

Defect: There is a potential fault in a number of ABS electronic control units.

Under certain circumstances a vehicle can experience a short loss of braking to either the front axle or one of the rear wheels.

Remedy: All vehicles identified as having suspect control units should have them disconnected and removed. Warning stickers being affixed to warn drivers accordingly. The braking system will continue to operate normally. When quality-assured units are available the vehicles will be returned to specification. Numbers involved: 33.

Model: Volvo FL7.

Build dates: 1989.

Vehicle identification numbers: FL7 889412 and FL7 889849.

Defect: The bracket holding the wire to the load-sensing valve may loosen, resulting in 50% reduction in rear brake effort.

Remedy: Renew bracket with a modified component.

Numbers involved: 2.
