Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• It is not by accident that we combine electrics with training in this issue. Electrics and electronics are becoming commonplace on today's trucks and proposed legislation on ABS braking and emissions will make them compulsory. The problems of recruiting and retaining people able to maintain these new systems are serious and likely to get more so. By 1993 there will be one million fewer 16-year-olds on the job market than there were in 1983.

Workshop managers and operators who do not train their fitters will lose business and staff to those who do. The vehicle manufacturers are often willing to help by making their training facilities available to operators' staff, usually at a nominal price or even free. Use them.

Training must be seen as an investment. Trained staff can be poached by others, but, in reality, how many people would move from a good and caring employer to one who treats his employees badly and does not train? Electronics on trucks may even help in recruiting young people. The time to act is now.
