Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Job prospects in transport are among the worst in Britain's service industries according to employment agency Manpower in its latest quarterly survey.

Only 13 per cent of transport companies expect to take on staff in the next three months. This compares with service industries generally, where 26 per cent of companies expect to recruit more staff.

The picture for jobs in road transport seems to have changed little from this time last year, despite a growth in the economy generally. The net percentage of employers expecting to increase jobs now stands at 11 per cent, compared with 12 per cent a year ago.

Regionally, the picture has changed little. Most of the Road Haulage Association's regional offices report poor job prospects.

Bob Entwistle, at the RHA's North-West office, says: "Job prospects here are not very good at all.

At the RHA's Eastern office, Ken Williams says: "If anything we are seeing more firms ceasing to trade than we did during this time last year."

Only Alan Gidley in the South-East office reports vacancies for drivers. He says there is a "slight improvement" in the jobs market.
