• A Parliamentary question about signposting on the M62 near Wakefield has been tabled by Labour MP David Marshall, who is sponsored by the Transport and General Workers Union.
Marshall's question concerns the lorry park at Whitwood. The Department of Transport has refused to allow the erection of signs on the motorway alerting drivers to the presence of the lorry park, because it says the signs would be distracting.
Jack Ashwell, national drivers' secretary of the TGWU dismisses the DTp's argument. "It allows signs giving the frequencies of local radio, and they are potentially far more distracting than signs for a lorry park," he says.
Whitwood lorry park has been in operation for 18 months. It was originally introduced as the result of a campaign by the unions, the road lobby and local authorities.
Ashwell expects the Government to respond by April 21.
