ACCORDING to Ian Irwin, chairman of the Scottish Bus Group and president of the Confederation of British Passenger Transport, Britain's road passenger transport system is the best in the Western world. Passengers who were inconvenienced by the Group's failure last year to operate 1.3m miles at weekends because of staff shortages are less enthusiastic An undertaking given ten years ago by trades union representatives to use their best efforts to ensure weekend working by voluntary overtime has not been honoured for some time, says Archie Douglas, SBG executive director (personnel). If the arrangements are not altered, plans to extend operations and prospects of employment will be jeopardised. It's tough to be the world's best.
