NOW THAT the minimum age for bus drivers has been reduced to 18, the driving of large passenger vehicles by young drivers is to be restricted to people employed by psv operators.
Recommending the change in the Commons, Norman Fowler Transport Minister said he has confidence that drivers would be carefully selected and trained and would take competence tests. .He pointed out that when qualified, these young drivers would be able to operate on regular passenger services of up to 50 kilometres and to drive empty buses between depots.
Michael McNair-Wilson (Tory, Newbury) wanted to see a professionally regulated training schedule approved by the Ministry to apply to those intending to take the psv vehicle test and Mr Fowler said he would look into this.
