PAY talks on behalf of 39,000 London busmen finally came to an end on Tuesday when the men's leaders decided to accept the offer of a straight 10s. a week rise all round.

The higher rates were due to come into effect from the pay week starting last Wednesday. They will bring the pay of a central bus driver up to £12 6s. 6d. a week and that of a central bus conductor up to £12 2s. 6d.

Although the pay rise was very much smaller than the 6 per cent 14s. a week increase they had hoped for, the busmen's negotiating committee of the T.G.W.U. had little choice but to accept. For in a branch vote at each of London Transport's 100 garages there was a clear majority in favour of acceptance. The actual voting was 62 in favour (although half of them did so "under protest") and 29 against. Only five garages voted in favour of the alternative offer of pay increases ranging from I ls. to 14s. a week tied to an acceptance of London Transport's package deal for higher productivity.

Even on the pay issue the last has not been heard yet. Unofficial elements have called another mass meeting on Sunday when an attempt will be made to impose an overtime ban in protest against the settlement.

Progress can now be expected on the provincial busmen's claims. A special wages committee met last week to consider further the 7s. a week pay offer made to 70,000 municipal busmen.

Next Monday the employers of 100,000 company busmen are due to give their reply to the pay claim at a meeting with the unions. There, is every chance of an offer and of an early settlement.
