How Weight is Saved and Inconvenience Overcome by Modern Rattle proof Shutters

SOMB years ago G. Brady and Co,, New Islington Works, Ancoats, Manehester, having had considerable experience in the production of roller shutters, turned its attention to their employment on road vehicles and, as a result, has developed types which are particularly suitable. The company's experience showed that roller shutters for motor bodies are distinctly different from those required for other duties, such as garages, and that, whilst van shutters can be used for light duty in buildings, the reverse is not the case.

The latest type of Brady shutter for vans and larger goods vehicles is claimed to be considerably lighter than the or dinary door. The roller is guaranteed to be non-rattling, its bearings are metal-to-metal, and the number of parts, all of which are standardized so as to be interchangeable, has been reduced to a minimum. The shutter is easier to fit than a door, and the framework of a van does not require the strength which naturally is necessary to support the weight on door hinges. A good feature is that should one of the wood laths be damaged, it can be replaced without disturbing the whole shutter. The shutter is raised or lowered in one second, without the need for caution such as is necessary with overhanging doors and, when pulled down, the hasp automatically falls over the staple, dispensing, in many cases, with the need for locking.

The employment of shutters of this kind at the sides of vehicles is particularly useful,' not only for unloading at the public footpath, but also when the vehicle is dealt with at a raised loading bank. A development of the idea has been the employment of side roller shutters for refuse vehicles. These have retained a considerable measure of poptlarity, even against the various patent' shutters that have been offered to the municipalities.

Heavier types of steel-hinge shutters are made by the company for garages, bus stations, etc., and it is possible to fit any number of shutters, divided by removable guides, so as to give an unbroken traffic way through an opening which is too wide for a single door or shutter. It is possible by this means to provide for extremely wide openings.

Geared rollers of the type fitted to steel shutters are used in the case of openings of area more than 120 sq. ft. In addition to the steel-hinge shutters made of wood laths, curtains of interlocking steel laths with malleable-iron wearing strips also are manufactured by the company.
