A T the time of writing most factories .tVand wholesale warehouses are in the unsettled-condition which invariably follows a national holiday. Reports generally, however, are in the same favourable strain as last week.

North-east Coast.

Steam-coal pits in Isherthumberlalid are well employed and have good pro spects for April. Ship repairing at Newcastle-on-Tyne is moderately active. Business in timber for building purposes is brisk.

Yorkshire.

West Riding woollen manufacturers are behind with deliveries. There has been a slight revival in the woollen trade in the Humber area.

Improved building conditions in the Dalt area have increased the demand for timber. A corresponding increase in the woollen trade has had the same effect with regard to timber for packing cases, and, sawmills are busy. According to reports from Bradford, the tone of the woollen market is good.

Concerns in Middlesbrough engaged on the production of constructional steel are well placed as regards work. From Sheffield it is reported that beneficial effects of the anti-dumping duties are beginning to be felt in new directions.

Lancashire. • Reports from Manchesthr are to the effect that there is a good volume of business in rayon yarns, whilst there is considerable activity in the home-trade markets for rayon fabric. Conditions in the hoot and shoe trade are slowly improving.. The demand for leather, too, is better than it has been, and 'a steady run of trade is anticipated.

The most active concerns in the engineering industry in Lancashire are those engaged in the manufacture of heavy motor vehicles. Leyland Motors, Ltd., and Crossley Motors, Ltd., are stated to be busy. Blackpool Corporation is considering building new baths, whilst in the same town an hotel containing 2,000 bedrooms is to be built.

A new exhibition hall and sports stadium is to be erected at Salford. An increased demand for timber for building purposes is being experienced by Liverpool sawmill owners.

Midlands.

Everything points to better business in the boot and shoe trade in Northampton. In Leicester, too, manufacturers are looking forward quite hopefully to the next three months, and in Kettering orders are more plentiful.

The hosiery trade in Leicester is better, and manufacturers are installing plant for making fine silk hose. In Nottingham the fancy-lace trade is slowly improving, orders being more plentiful and employment returns better. Makers of embroidery lace are active and the general improvement in the hosiery trade is maintained. The silkhose trade in Leicester continues to be excellent and new plant is being installed in the factories.

• There are definite signs or improvement in the pottery industry. Manufac

turers of hardware are anticipating continued improvement in trade. Electrical engineers in Birmingham are well employed.

The carpet-manufacturing industry at Kidderminster is flourishing.

In the market-gardening districts of Worcestershire there are a few openings for hauliers acting as intermediaries between growers and sellers.

South Wales.

It is expected that the anthracite coal trade will improve during the next week or two. The tin-plate market remains bright in tone and the outlook is considered to be improving. A new factory is to be opened in Newport for the manufacture of glazed tiles, and another for the manufacture of insulated and acid-resisting articles.

East Anglia.

The improvement in the boot and shoe trade shows signs of continuing. There are more operatives at work now than a year ago.

Scotland.

The recent improvement in the woollen industry in the Glasgow area has been maintained, and orders are coming in more freely. The feeling in the hosiery and underwear trade is better and there is an increased demand for knitted woollen goods.

West Country.

Demand for shoes in Bristol is steady and tends to improve. The sawmills in this area are busy, chiefly as the outcome of activity in the building trade. A new cinema is to be built in Gerston Road, Paignton.

London.

There is a fair call for spring lines in boots and shoes and the trade is freshening. Chancery Lane Station is to be rebuilt
