A ',THOUGH the majority of Coach .ti owners are devoting more and more attention to the operation . of small coachesbearing a resemblance to the large types of private touring. car, the concern known as The Greys, of Southport, have in service a fleet of eight 20 h.p. Volcano, none of which has a seating capacity for more than eight people. Thereare six five-seater Iandaulets, one six-seater all-weather car and one eight-seater touring model. This company has endeavoured to anticipate a gradual diversion of interest from large touring vehicles to privately hired cars, and at 10, Hoghton Street are the headquarters of an organization which specializes in tours "that are different."
Not only is a speciality made of day runs from Southport, but the company also runa extended tours to Scotland, Devon and Cornwall, London and the South Coast, Wales, the South and South-East Coast, and to race meetings, particularly the Derby and Ascot.
In an interview with a representative of the company, we were interested to learn that 75 per cent, of the passengers who booked with The Greys come from places outside Southport, more particularly Liverpool, Blackburn, Preston and other large Lancashire towns. During the winter months the fleet is provided with useful work in connection with the conveyance of theatre and football parties. Moreover, the fact that Southport is a fashionable winter holiday resort redounds to the advantage of the company.
Quotations are based on the seating capacity of the vehicles, and the usual charge for day trips is about Pd. per running mile, with extras, in certain cases, for waiting time. Cars were hired out to private parties for the Grand National. the quotation being £7 10s. for the day.
So far as extended tours are concerned, each of these includes lunch. dinner,. bed and breakfast, also hotel gratuities, at an inclusive charge, which, for the various teurs, works out as follow:—
